Smolyan Bulgaria
Smolyan is a town in southern Bulgaria, situated in the Rhodope Mountains. It is the administrative centre of Smolyan Province and has a population of 27,184 people.
Smolyan was first mentioned in a document from 1546. The name is derived from the local dialect word for “muddy”.
The town is an important tourist centre, with many hotels and guest houses. It is also a good base for exploring the nearby mountains, such as the towering peak of Mt. Botev (2,376 m).
